Located in western Uganda 241 KM (4 hours 50 minutes’ drive) from Entebbe Airport, the park was gazetted in 1982 and occupies an geographical areas of: 370km2 at an attitude: 1,220m-1,828m above sea level and wetland habitats comprise 20% of the park’s surface.

Together with 13 other lakes in the area, Lake Mburo forms part of a 50km-long wetland system linked by a swamp. Five of these lakes lie within the park’s borders. Once covered by open savanna, Lake Mburo National Park now contains much woodland as there are no elephants to tame the vegetation. In the western part of the park, the savanna is interspersed with rocky ridges and forested gorges while patches of papyrus swamp and narrow bands of lush riparian woodland line many lakes.

With over 35o bird species, the Park harbors several land mammals which are not easily observed anywhere in Uganda. Lake Mburo national park is also the best place to see Zebras in Uganda and this park supports the country’s only remaining population of impala, the handsome antelope for which Kampala (Uganda’s capital city) got its name from. Other wildlife species that are seen in lake Mburo are the Waterbuck, common duiker, Zebras, leopards, warthogs bohor reedbuck, topi, oribi and errand. The Park covers an area of 260sq km, with mainly woodland Savanah and scattered acacia trees.

This is one of the parks where visitors are allowed to do a walking Safari, cycling safari and horseback riding with accompaniment of a ranger. Lake Mburo is also famous for the remarkable long horned cattle, a breed of cattle that is commonly seen in western parts of Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda.

Activities and attraction. The activities and attractions within and around Lake Mburo National Park that are often of interest by international visitors and that offer a stunning experience to wildlife enthusiast and holiday travellers include; wildlife game drives, Boat trips, Cycling Safaris, Guided Walks, Horse Back Safaris and Ankole Cultural Centre. The best way to explore the park fully is by road and also dame driving in Lake Mburo will give the best opportunity for seeing the impala and zebra. These two species are the flagship species for Lake Mburo, because it is the only place in Uganda to see the majestic impala and the only easily accessible place to see Burchell’s zebra. Game Drives can be taken along numerous different paths, the best choice dependent upon weather and seasonality. During the dry season, animals tend to congregate around the swamps and lakes; this is a remarkable photo opportunity – a magnitude of wild African animals with the sparkling lakes in the background.
